Comeback gold is the extra gold a team can gain after being behind in kills or net worth, helping the losing side recover from a poor early or midgame.
In Dota 2, this mechanic matters because it reduces how hard a strong lead can snowball: a team that wins a fight against a much richer opponent can receive a larger share of gold than the raw kill reward would suggest. That can quickly fund key items and bring the game back into reach. For example, if a team that has fallen behind wipes the enemy lineup in a team fight, the kill rewards and related comeback payout can give several heroes the gold needed to complete core items like Black King Bar or Blink Dagger.
